There had been some people in the church who claimed that the rapture had already taken place and the believers had been left behind. Paul encouraged the people that this was not so and again taught them about the coming of the Lord. He then encouraged and prayed for them.

In the first 11 verses of this chapter Paul notes the unexpected nature of the coming of the Lord and how we should prepare for that event.

Paul encourages the believers to strive to be more obedient, holy, loving and diligent. He also encouraged them about the hope and comfort we have for those who have died in Christ.

The church was founded by Paul and suffered persecution from the Jews, Greeks and Gentiles. Paul wrote the letter to encourage the believers in their faith and ensure them of Christ’s return.

On planning his third visit to the Corinthian church Paul challenges the congregation to not allow the influence of the world to enter into the church. For those who have fallen he wants them to repent before he comes. They are to examine themselves to see if they are true believers. For us it is a good time too for a spiritual checkup.
